Freeway tolls have increased by an average of 15%, says Abbas Bayat Sarmadi, director general of Freeways Utilization and Maintenance Company.
“Each year, the increase in toll rate of freeways is determined and notified by the minister of roads and urban development. The rise in freeway tolls is measured based on inflation in the first half of the year and enforced in August or September. But this year, given the inflation and economic hardship, the minister asked the company to increase tolls later than the previous years’ scheduled date,” he was quoted as saying by Fars News Agency.
Samadi noted that the increase in tolls would be enforced on freeways that have non-governmental investors; the Roads Ministry does not decide about public freeways.
According to an announcement made by the ministry, toll hikes have taken effect since Dec. 30, 2020.
The average goods and services Consumer Price Index in the 12-month period ending Sept. 21, which marks the end of the sixth Iranian month, increased by 26% compared with the corresponding period of last year, data released by the Statistical Center of Iran show.
