A total of 849,000 tons of pulses are expected to be produced in the current crop season, to register a 21% increase compared with last year’s yields.
According to Faramak Aziz Karimi, director general of the Agriculture Ministry’s Grains and Essential Goods Department, land under the cultivation of different kinds of pulses in Iran has decreased by 3% to reach 818,000 hectares, Mehr News Agency reported.
The official noted that this year, around 1,200 tons of seeds were planted.
Pulses are mainly cultivated in Iran’s western, northwestern and northeastern provinces.
“Kermanshah, Lorestan, Kurdestan and East and West Azarbaijan are chickpea production hubs. Lentils are mainly grown in Ardabil, Lorestan, Qazvin and North Khorasan while beans are grown in Fars, Lorestan, Zanjan and Markazi provinces,” Karimi said.
“Part of the pulse cultivation in rain-fed farms has been postponed to autumn instead of spring which, coupled with increased mechanization, has resulted in a 4% increase in yields per hectare to 2,381 kilograms this year.”
