Iran is home to 134 chicken hatcheries, of which 120 are active and 14 inactive, a new report by the Statistical Center of Iran shows. 
The northern Mazandaran and Gilan provinces have the largest number of hatcheries in the country with 41 and 23, respectively. 
Hatcheries in Iran own 2,159 setters (a machine that monitors temperature and humidity for the first 18 days of incubating chicken eggs) with a capacity of 116 million eggs and 1,689 hatchers (machines similar to that of setter but without a turning mechanism and the trays are designed to hold the eggs for three days) with a capacity of 44 million eggs. 
Active hatcheries produced 1,289 million day-old broiler chickens, 53 million day-old egg-laying chicken, 1.4 million day-old genetically-engineered broiler chickens, 826,000 day-old genetically-engineered egg-laying chickens, 9.8 million day-old local chickens and 2.3 million fowls from other poultry birds in the year ending March 2020. 
Last year’s total output of hatcheries stood at 1,356 million fowls, indicating a 10% growth compared with the year ending March 2017. 
More than 1,664 million eggs were produced in these hatchery sites in the year ending March 2020, indicating an 8% increase compared with the year ending March 2017. 
The number of workers at hatcheries stood at 2,845 men and 230 women last year.
