More than 2,500 tons of tangerine have been exported from Mazandaran Province’s Miandoroud County since the beginning of the current Iranian year on March 20.
According to Esmaeil Alavi, a local official, there are 7,460 hectares of orchards in Miandoroud, of which 2,604 hectares cultivate tangerines.
"We estimate that more than 78,000 tons of the citrus fruit will be harvested this year,” he was quoted as saying by IRNA.
Every year, more than 110,000 hectares of land go under the cultivation of citrus fruits (25,000 hectares cultivate different varieties of tangerine) in Mazandaran, which meet nearly 50% of domestic demand.
About 2.5 million tons of citrus are harvested in the northern Iranian province located along the Caspian Sea every year.
Mazandaran is home to 460,000 hectares of farmlands that produce about 6 million tons of agricultural products annually.
Over 10% of value-added in Iran's agriculture sector are generated in Mazandaran Province.
