A total of 242 million tons of commodities were transported across the country via road during the first half of the current Iranian year (March 20-Sept. 21), according to Mehran Qorbani, deputy head of the Road Maintenance and transportation Organization affiliated with the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development.
“More than 49.3 million tons of the transported goods [around 20% of the total sum] pertained to agricultural, livestock and foodstuff products, showing an 8% rise compared with the similar period of last year,” the official was quoted by IRIB News as saying.
Roads Minister, Mohammad Eslami, has recently voiced concerns about the slow pace of transportation of goods from the country’s ports to their destinations. The official told IRNA that the capacity to store goods in ports are limited and there is a need for prompt transportation of commodities from the country’s southern and northern ports.
