Iranian Exhibition Sector Sustains $4.4m in Pandemic Losses

Iran’s exhibitions sector has suffered 1.25 trillion rials ($4.26 million) in losses since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in mid-February, according to the head of the Union for International Exhibitions of Iran.
“Last [Iranian] year [March 2019-20], about 500 exhibitions were held in the country. This is while in the first half of the current year [March 20-Sept. 21), only 30 exhibitions have been held,” Ali Yarmohammadian was also quoted as saying by ILNA.
The official said the exhibition sector in Iran and business has generated 1,700 direct and over 280,000 indirect jobs, adding that a majority of these jobs are now at risk. 
Bahman Hosseinzadeh, managing director of Iran International Exhibitions Company, said in July that given the significant role played by specialized exhibitions, in promoting non-oil exports, Iran International Exhibitions Company is determined to hold all events as scheduled despite the coronavirus.
“Shutting down the economy is not a viable option, considering scientists’ predictions that the coronavirus outbreak is likely to prevail for years. However, it is still possible to hold exhibitions according to health protocols,” he was quoted as saying by IRNA. 
Noting that 82 events are slated for the current Iranian year (March 2020-21), the official said Tehran International Fairground has been equipped with disinfectant tunnels and whatever is needed to stem the spread of the virus. 
In addition, other measures, including online registration, banning public visits, training security personnel and Iranian Red Crescent Society members who are stationed at the fairground and distribution of disinfecting products will ensure the safety of participants and visitors.
