A total of 966,000 tons of commodities worth $519 million were exported to 62 countries from Khorasan Razavi Province during the first five months of the current Iranian year (March 20-Aug. 21).
According to Superintendent of Khorasan Razavi Customs Administration Omid Jahankhah, the exports included saffron, iron and steel bars, pistachio, chicken, tomato paste, floorings and apparel, IRNA reported.
Afghanistan, Iraq, Hong Kong, Uzbekistan, Spain, the UAE, Turkmenistan, Pakistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan are among the main destinations of exports from Khorasan Razavi.
The official added that 63,000 tons of goods worth $149 million were also imported into the province during the same period. Imports mainly included cellphones, cotton, potassium chloride, raw silk, coffee beans, lentils and machinery.
Jahankhah said the province registered a trade surplus of $370 million in the five months.
Lotfabad, Sarakhs, Bajgiran, Dogharoun and Mashhad are Khorasan Razavi Province’s five border crossings along its 833 kilometers of borders with Turkmenistan and Afghanistan.
Khorasan Razavi, bordering Afghanistan and Turkmenistan, is considered Iran’s gateway to Central Asia. However, the coronavirus pandemic and Turkmenistan’s strict border measures have affected the province’s trade in the past months.
The northeastern province is the hub of saffron cultivation in Iran. It is home to 82,000 hectares under saffron cultivation, which produce 256 tons of the crop annually, equivalent to 79% of Iran's total saffron output.
