Around 86% of Iran’s agricultural activities are carried out by small-scale farmers and only a meager 14% are undertaken by large agricultural corporations that yield better harvests as well as higher economic profit.
The announcement was made by the CEO of Central Agricultural and Non-Agricultural Activities Corporation, affiliated with the Central Organization for Rural Cooperatives of Iran, Mehr News Agency reported.
“These small-scale farmers have pieces of land that are smaller than 10 hectares. Figures show that under larger agricultural corporations, farmers earn 2 to 2 1/2 times as much profit than they do in their small-scale farms,” Gholamhossein Tabatabaei added.
Tabatabaei noted that by becoming members of large-scale agricultural corporations, these farmers can increase their yield and sell their products under brands that are better known in the market while still owning their land and enjoying tax exemptions for up to 10 years.
