A major direct-reduced iron plant with a production capacity of 960,000 tons of sponge iron per year has come on stream in Ardakan, Yazd Province. 
The project was inaugurated on Tuesday by President Hassan Rouhani via videoconference, with Khodadad Gharibpour, the chairman of Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization, present at the site, the news portal of the Ministry of Industries, Mining and Trade reported.
The plant has increased the country’s total DRI production capacity to 36.3 million tons per annum, the news portal of the Industries Ministry.
Completed at a cost of 22.75 trillion rials ($96.8 million), the project has created 500 direct jobs.
