SCI Monthly Report Scrutinizes Food Products’ Price Changes

With a coefficient of 26.64%, the CPI of food and beverage stood at 264.9 in the month ending July 21, indicating a 6.7% increase compared with the month before and registered a year-on-year increase of 20.9%.

The Statistical Center of Iran has released a report reviewing the price changes in food products during the month ending July 21.  

The biggest month-on-month price rise for a food item during the month under review in urban areas was recorded for eggs with 41.8%. A kilogram of eggs was sold at 154,260 rials (65 cents).

The second and third biggest month-on-month price increase during the period under review was registered for chicken with 39.2% and oranges with 19.4%, SCI reported. 

A kilogram of chicken was sold at 172,677 rials (73 cents) and a kilogram of oranges went for 138,911 rials (58 cents) in the last Iranian month. 

Four out of 24 food items examined by SCI every month saw a price decline in the fourth Iranian month (June 21-July 21) compared with the month before. The sharpest of such price decline was recorded for bananas with 25.8%, followed by onions with 6.4%, tomatoes with 5.1% and potatoes with 2.3%.

A kilogram of bananas was sold at 143,596 rials (60 cents), a kilogram of onions 32,175 rials (13 cents), a kilogram of tomatoes 39,296 rials (16 cents) and a kilogram of potatoes went for 41,083 rials (17 cents). 

Compared with the same month of the year before (year-on-year price changes), the retail prices for lentil during the month under review increased by 130.8%, registering the highest YOY price rise for a food item last month. 

 

Year-on-year price deflations were registered for five food items, with the sharpest such price decrease posted for potatoes with 47.3% and tomato paste with 21.2%

 

The second and third biggest year-on-year price rises in the same month among food items were registered for imported rice with 85.1% and eggs and foreign packed tea with both 65.7%. 

A kilogram of lentil was sold at 227,935 rials (96 cents), a kilogram of imported rice at 164,087 rials (69 cents) and 500 grams of foreign packed tea were sold at 638,882 rials ($2.7).

Year-on-year price deflations were registered for five food items: the sharpest of such price decreases was posted for potatoes with 47.3% and tomato paste with 21.2%. 

A kilogram of tomato paste was sold at 172,386 rials (73 cents).

With a coefficient of 26.64%, the Consumer Price Index of food and beverage stood at 264.9 in the month ending July 21, indicating a 6.7% increase compared with the month before. 

The food and beverage index registered a year-on-year increase of 20.9%. The CPI of food and beverage group in the 12-month period ending July 21 increased by 24.2% compared with last year’s corresponding period.      

The overall average annual inflation rate in Iran stood at 26.4% in the month under review.

SCI had put the average annual inflation rate for the preceding Iranian month, which ended on June 20, at 27.8%. 

The consumer inflation during the June 21-July 21 period registered a year-on-year increase of 26.9% compared with the similar month of previous Iranian year. The year-on-year inflation of the month ending June 20 was 22.5%. 

The overall CPI (using the Iranian year to March 2017 as the base year) stood at 227.9 last month, indicating a 6.4% rise compared with the month before. 

SCI put the average annual both urban and rural inflation for the month under review at 26.4%. 

CPI registered a year-on-year increase of 27% for urban areas and 25.9% for rural areas in the month ending July 21. 

The overall CPI stood at 226.7 for urban households and 234.9 for rural households, indicating a month-on-month increase of 6.5% and 5.9% for urban and rural areas, respectively.

The highest monthly growth in the index among 12 groups of the basket of consumer goods and services purchased by households in the Iranian month ending July 21 was recorded for the three groups of “tobacco”, “transportation” and “leisure and culture” with 7% and the lowest monthly growth for “education” with 3.3% 

The highest and lowest year-on-year inflation in the month under review was posted for transportation (55.9%) and communications (10.3%), and the highest and lowest average annual inflation was registered for transportation (45.4%) and communications (7.3%).
