A 7,000-ton cargo of Iran’s watermelon exports to Turkey was returned due to a sudden surge in the neighboring country’s import tariffs, Rouhollah Latifi, the spokesperson of the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration, said.
Turkey would impose $100 per ton tariff on imports of watermelon up until last Thursday, but suddenly and without prior notice, it has increased the import duty to $300 per ton.
“Confused Iranian exporters had to return their products, as correspondence between Iran-Turkey Chamber of Commerce and Turkish authorities failed to produce the desired outcome,” Mehr News Agency quoted Latifi as saying on Friday.
