The Statistical Center of Iran's latest report on price changes in food products shows the biggest month-on-month price rise for a food item during the month ending April 19 was recorded for tomatoes with 35.4%.
A kilogram of tomatoes was sold at 64,140 rials (40 cents).
The second and third biggest month-on-month price increase during the period under review was registered for potatoes with 23.6% and lentils with 19.5%.
A kilogram of potatoes was sold at 58,241 rials (36 cents) and a kilogram of lentils went for 145,850 rials (91 cents) last month.
Three out of 24 food items examined by SCI every month saw a price decline in the first Iranian month (March 20-April 19) compared with the month before. The sharpest such price decline were recorded for chicken with 9.9%, followed by tomato paste with 0.2% and butter with 0.1% month-on-month deflation.
A kilogram of chicken was sold at 116,231 rials (72 cents), a kilogram of tomato paste went for 171,687 rials ($1.07) and 100 grams of butter were sold at 46,768 rials (29 cents).
Compared with the same month of the year before, retail prices for packed foreign tea during the month increased by 80%, registering the highest year-on-year price rise for a food item last month.
The second and third biggest year-on-year price rises in the same month among food items were registered for lentils with 57.8% and bananas with 46.2%.

Five-hundred grams of packed foreign tea were sold at 593,388 rials ($3.7) and a kilogram of bananas went for 192,875 rials ($1.2) last month.
Year-on-year price deflations were registered for seven food items, with the sharpest of such price decrease posted for onions with 21.7% and chicken with 19.7%.
A kilogram of onions was sold at 86,769 rials (54 cents).
With a coefficient of 26.64%, the Consumer Price Index of "food and beverages" stood at 241.8 in the month ending April 19, indicating a 5.2% increase compared with the month before.
The food and beverage index registered a year-on-year increase of 10.7%. The CPI of food and beverage group in the 12-month period ending April 19 increased by 36.8% compared with last year’s corresponding period.
The overall average goods and services Consumer Price Index in the 12-month period ending April 19, which marks the end of the first month of the current Iranian year, increased by 32.2% compared with the corresponding period of the previous year.
SCI had put the average annual inflation rate for the preceding Iranian month, which ended on March 19, 2020, at 34.8%.
The average annual inflation has been on a downtrend since the middle of last Iranian year (March 2019-20).
The consumer inflation for the month under review (March 20-April 19, 2020) registered a year-on-year increase of 19.8% compared with the similar month of the previous Iranian year.
The overall CPI (using the Iranian year to March 2017 as the base year) stood at 204.8 last month, indicating a 2.1% rise compared with the month before.
CPI registered a year-on-year increase of 20.2% for urban areas and 18.1% for rural areas in the month ending April 19.
The overall CPI reached 203.4 for urban households and 212.6 for rural households, indicating a month-on-month increase of 2% and 3.1% for urban and rural areas, respectively.
SCI put the average annual inflation for the month under review for urban and rural at 31.9% and 33.9% respectively.
