A total of 49 work and residence permits were issued for foreign nationals in Aras Free Trade and Industrial Zone located in West Azarbaijan Province last year (March 2019-20), indicating a 104% rise compared with the year before.
According to Hedayat Bayramzadeh, the head of Work and Employment Services Department of Aras Free Trade Zone Organization, investors from Turkey and Azerbaijan hold the highest number of permits issued last year, adding that Georgian, Chinese, Russian and South Korean investors are also active in Aras, Fars News Agency reported.
Situated in northwest Iran bordering Armenia, Azerbaijan and the semi-autonomous Nakhchivan region, Aras is the main gateway to mainland Iran from the northern Commonwealth of Independent States.
Aras is likely to become a far more central and major player in the years to come, as the area has historical links with its northern neighbors.
