India’s 10th wheat consignment for Afghanistan arrived in Iran’s southeastern Shahid Beheshti Port in Chabahar on Wednesday, with Afghanistan's Ambassador in Tehran Abdul Ghafoor Liwal in attendance.
The general cargo ship NEGAR carried a total of 203 containers, including 5,000 tons of wheat and humanitarian aid, from India’s Kandla Port to Chabahar to be transported via road to Milak, a border city on the Afghan border, ILNA quoted Behrouz Aqaei, the head of Sistan-Baluchestan's Ports and Maritime Organization, as saying.
New Delhi, Tehran and Kabul signed a trilateral deal in 2016 to develop the port of Shahid Beheshti and use it as a hub for the transit of goods from India to landlocked Afghanistan.
The first phase of Chabahar’s Shahid Beheshti Port was inaugurated by President Hassan Rouhani in December 2017.
Chabahar, Iran’s sole oceanic port along the southeastern coast of the country, serves as a transit route linking India, Iran and Afghanistan bypassing Pakistan.
