A total of 122,482 research and development projects were carried out in Iran in the fiscal 2017-18, on which 121 billion rials ($815,178) were spent, according to a recent report published by the Statistical Center of Iran.
Out of the total number of R&D projects, 21,949 were fundamental, 65,638 were applied and 34,895 were development projects, SCI reported on its website.  
Over the same period, 225,658 researchers worked on these projects, 155,222 of whom were male and 70,436 were female. A total of 118,987 of these researchers were employed full-time.
From the total number of researchers, 65.43% were PhD holders, 23.66% had MS or MA, 9.22% held a bachelor’s degree and 1.69% had an associate or lower degrees.
SCI drew on four statistical populations in this report, namely research centers; universities and higher education institutes; industrial units employing 50 or more workers with R&D departments; in addition to knowledge-based companies.
