Iran exported 18,500 tons of eggs to its neighboring countries during the first half of the current Iranian year (March 21-Sept. 22), says Reza Torkashvand, the head of Producers of Egg-Laying Hens Union.
According to the official, egg exports have been on the rise last month, IRNA reported.
Egg exports had been banned until May 21 to ensure adequate supplies to the domestic market.
Yet after the resumption of exports past the above date, major export markets, namely Iraq and Afghanistan, were initially not interested in importing eggs from Iran as the country failed to maintain steady exports to those countries and lost the markets to other countries, mainly Turkey.
According to Deputy Agriculture Minister Morteza Rezaei, egg production is predicted to witness an increase of 11% compared to last year (March 2018-19) to 1 million tons by the end of the current Iranian year (March 19, 2020).
A total of 900,000 tons of eggs were produced last year, 90% of which were by industrial units and the rest by local farmers.
Each Iranian consumes an average of 200 eggs annually, Mehr News Agency reported.
According to Rezaei, Iran is the 10th biggest egg producer in the world and fifth in Asia.
