Iranian parliamentarians agreed in principle to the formation of a commerce ministry with 132 votes in favor and 78 against while eight abstained from voting on Wednesday.
If approved, the separation of commerce department from the current Ministry of Industries, Mining and Trade would reverse the previous government’s decision in 2012 to merge several ministries purportedly to create a streamlined and efficient administration, ILNA reported.
“Eight years into the merger of former commerce ministry and the ministry of industries and mines, details of the authority and responsibilities of the Ministry of Industries, Mining and Trade have not been ratified and communicated,” Sharif Hosseini, deputy industries minister for parliamentary affairs, said.
“The current economic climate requires the establishment of a separate ministry of trade and commerce in order to centralize activities related to people’s livelihood,” he added.
