Drought and low precipitation levels have caused losses amounting to 114.89 trillion rials ($368 million) in Lorestan Province’s agriculture sector so faro Organization said on Wednesday.
“Damage caused to the agronomic sector stands at 81 trillion rials [$259 million], to horticulture at 14.2 trillion rials [$45 million], red meat production at 8.29 trillion rials [$265 million], fisheries and seafood production at 4.05 trillion rials [$129 million], apiculture at 3.75 trillion rials [$120 million], milk production at 2.33 trillion rials [$74 million] and natural resources at 1.25 trillion rials [$40 million],” Emad Shahrokhi was also quoted as saying by ISNA.
In a report, Iran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture has warned agricultural officials of an imminent drought that would cripple the country’s agricultural activities and hamper economic growth in this sector in the current Iranian year (March 2022-23).
The ICCIMA report says precipitation levels have fallen drastically.
The Majlis Research Center has released a list of Iranian provinces in a critical state of water shortage: Isfahan, Hormozgan, Sistan-Baluchestan, Ardabil, Fars, Markazi and Khorasan Razavi.
“Drought has inflicted 670 trillion rials [$2.4 billion] in losses on Iran’s agriculture sector since the beginning of the current crop year,” Mohammad Mousavi, director general of the Agriculture Ministry’s Crisis Management Department, said in June 2021.
