Clunkers that have outlived their usefulness, but are still operating as private, public or commercial vehicles have been banned from plying in major Iranian cities.
Vali Maleki, a member of Majlis Industries and Mines Commission, said old vehicles are limited to cities with a population of less than 100,000, ISNA reported.
“The new regulation was approved by Majlis on May 20 as an amendment to a law passed by the parliament on the same day for regulating the country’s automotive sector,” he added.
Details have not been publicized about the new regulation so far.
The move is aimed at easing air and environment pollution in metropolises. However, experts believe limiting smog-inducing vehicles to small cities will not solve the problem.
There are over 20 million vehicles in the country, including two- and four-wheelers, a big part of which are aging.
