    IME Resumes Car Sales

Iran Mercantile Exchange listed eight more cars manufactured by six automakers putting the number of cars traded at the bourse to fifteen.

The Securities and Exchange News Agency said the new cars include two SUVs offered by Iran Khodro (IKCO), two trucks from Bahman Motors and four from other auto assemblers. Earlier the IME had listed cars made by SAIPA and Kerman Motors.

The new listing comes after the resumption of auto offers via the IME after car sales were suspended by the Industries Ministry.

As per current procedures only vehicles not subject to pricing mechanism by the government can be offered at the IME.

In June the ministry said selling cars at the IME was not compatible with existing rules that regulate the chaotic auto market and temporarily stopped auto sales.

The ministry referred to the huge gap between supply and demand in the auto market, arguing that offering cars in demand and in short supply at the IME inflated prices.

It was also argued that auto sales at the IME had created “multiple prices” for a particular car (factory price, the IME price and free market price).

While the ministry later backtracked, its move to suspend auto offers was censured by capital market authorities, shareholders of auto companies and government officials.
