The board of directors of Tehran Stock Exchange on Sunday appointed Mahmoud Goudarzi as the new head.
Goudarzi was appointed as TSE caretaker on Sept.29 after the former CEO Ali Sahrae’e was forced to step down following a scandal related to the undeclared and unauthorized cryptocurrency mining on TSE promises.
Goudarz was the TSE market deputy for years. He is a former CEO of Saba Tamin Brokerage Company and was a board member of several investment and financial companies.
Reports about illegal TSE cryptmining gained more public attention simply because stock market officials had often spoken against investment in cryptocurrencies.
Sahrae’e, however, linked the cryptomining operations to R&D plans of the TSE and rejected allegations that it was seeking to profit from mining digital currency.
Mostafa Beheshti, executive deputy of the Securities and Exchange Organization, later said that the contraband crypto equipment was not owned by a particular person. However, “such activity is beyond the TSE purview and those in charge must be accountable”.
The SEO in a notice said such activity was incompatible with the TSE articles of association and the issue was under investigation by its legal department.
Mining virtual currency is legal in Iran and miners can operate only under rules approved by the government.
