    4 Banks Lead in E-Payment

    Data on the performance of Shaparak Network, Iran's domestic payment network, shows Bank Mellat, Bank Melli Iran, Bank Saderat Iran and Bank Sepah together accounted for nearly half the e-payment in the calendar month to May 21.

    More than 3.02 billion transactions worth 4,801.3 trillion rials ($20 billion) were processed in the month. Mellat topped the list with 19.5% of the transactions and their total value, Shaparak website said.

    BMI was second at 14.4% in volume terms and 12.37% in value. BSI came next with 7.4% and 10.7% in volume and value, respectively. Parsian Bank topped the list of private lenders in terms of the number of transactions reaching 6.3%.

    POS Impact

    Figures show that Mellat, BMI, BSI and Sepah had the most  POS terminals in the country. The report said 9.66 million POS terminals, 1.6 million online gateways and 1.4 million mobile gateways were active during the month under review.

    Almost 88% of Bank Mellat transactions were made via POS terminals while BMI’s share was 90% and Saderat 99%.

    The lowest share of POS transactions belonged to Middle East Bank, Ayandeh Bank and Parsian Bank, with 37%, 53% and 71%, respectively.

    Cards and PSPs

    A total of 118.9 million bank cards were used at least once during the month, 94% being debit cards.

    The total number of bank cards remained almost unchanged, compared to the previous month. However, Shaparak reported 45% growth in the number of credit cards and a drop of 7% in gift cards, compared to the month before.

    Bank Melli Iran accounted for 22% of active bank cards. Bank Mellat and Bank Saderat Iran followed with 11.54% and 11%, respectively.

    The report said Saman Electronic Payment Company topped the list of payment service providers in volume and value.

    SEP, affiliated to Saman Bank, processed 20.09% of the transactions. In value terms, the company had a 19.38% share of the total payments via digital tools.

    Beh Pardakht Mellat and Parsian e-Commerce Company, affiliated to Parsian Bank, were second and third with 19.5% and 19.01%, respectively.
