A new mobile vehicle inspection unit has been launched in west Tehran, increasing the number of mobile inspection centers to six, Tehran Vehicle Technical Inspection Bureau announced.
Navab Hosseini, the bureau chief, said the new center, which increases the number of active inspection units in the capital to 22, has one test line, ISNA reported.
"Depending on the number of people visiting the inspection centers and demand of services, the mobile units can move to other parts of the city," he added.
Hosseini said the efficiency of mobile units will help reduce the difficulty of finding less crowded auto inspection centers in the ever-expanding capital.
Drivers can find the location and working hours of inspection units via the bureau’s website, Inspection.tehran.ir.
Except for new cars that enjoy a five-year exemption, vehicle owners are required to conduct inspections annually. Public and commercial vehicles need to be checked every six months.
The mandatory vehicle inspections help curb fuel consumption and improve air quality that has become a major concern in all major Iranian cities.
According to Iran’s Department of Environment, regular vehicle inspection helps reduce fuel consumption and air pollution by 12% and 20% respectively.
The proper maintenance of cars through regular technical inspections extends the life of the vehicle, safeguards the environment and reduces potential risks to human life through road mishaps.
Hosseini noted that in the first two months of the current fiscal year (started March 21), an estimated 170,000 vehicles visited the test centers in Tehran.
"The figure is 4% higher than the same period of last year," he added.
After the Air Pollution Reduction scheme was launched by Tehran Municipality in September 2018, car owners had their vehicles checked at inspection centers.
As per the APR, implemented by Tehran Municipality on Nov. 24, 2018, to help improve air quality, dilapidated vehicles are banned in the sprawling city and violators are fined.
All two- and four-wheelers in the metropolis must undergo inspections and acquire conformity cards showing that the vehicle is roadworthy.
“Currently, 5,500 motorists visit vehicle inspection centers in Tehran daily,” Hosseini added.
