International driving permits issued inside Iran are honored in more than 150 countries. They function as an official translation of an Iranian driver's license into six foreign languages.
Article 24 of the United Nations Convention on Road Traffic (1949) authorizes Touring & Automobile Club of the Islamic Republic of Iran to issue IDPs to those who hold valid Iranian driving licenses.
These permits are not intended to replace valid Iranian licenses and should only be used as a supplement to a valid license. An IDP is valid for one year from the effective date, provided the Iranian license is still valid throughout that period.
Also, the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran has designated the Touring & Automobile Club as an authorized distributor of IDPs. Before departure, you can obtain an IDP by contacting the local authorities throughout Iran.
For foreigners looking to use an International Driving Permit, they should take their foreign license to the automobile club and fill out the forms in English. When authorized, the new IDP will be valid inside Iran.
