Iran issues many types of license plates, some are special to certain areas and some, in line with international standards are for particular groups of drivers i.e. disabled people. Financial Tribune lists below which ones are likely to be seen on the streets of Iran and what the plethora of colors and designations means.
The current system was first created in 2003 and aims to cover all kinds of private, governmental and commercial vehicles on the roads of Iran. The numerical system – similar in style to the French license plate – also has the designation of the city it originates from on the latter two numbers.
In all, Iran has 14 types of license plates with private ones coming from 14 cities.
