Mercedes Benz has announced its G Class 5.5 liter naturally aspirated V8 engine is likely to get cut in favor of a new 4.0 liter twin turbo V8 found in the new Mercedes AMG GT. The news of the downgrade to the durable 4x4 was reported by CARS.co.uk on Sunday.
Mercedes said although the new engine system is less powerful in terms of size, it still packs a punch and is much more environmentally friendly. In an effort to curb emissions on the car, Mercedes said the new engine meets with planned Euro6 emissions standards coming into effect next year.
The 2016 model year will also see the introduction of the V-12-powered G65. This model has been enhanced by Mercedes-AMG and features a twin-turbo 6.0-liter V-12 good for 621 hp. It’s not clear what’s in store for Mercedes-AMG’s G63, though we should see the vehicle’s twin-turbo 5.5-liter V-8 eventually replaced by a more powerful version of the 4.0-liter mill at some point as well; however, this is likely to be heading to Persian Gulf states rather than Europe.
