A total of 53,672 gasoline-powered public transportation and commercial vehicles have been converted into compressed natural gas hybrids over the past few months.
The initiative is part of a nationwide scheme launched by the National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company last spring.
West Azarbaijan has been the most receptive province with 5,900 conversions registered so far. It was followed by Tehran with 4,712 and Mazandaran with 4,646 conversions, NIORDC reported on its website.
On the contrary, Hormozgan, Bushehr and Kohgilouyeh-Boyerahmad provinces had the lowest number of applicants and conducted 11, 79 and 90 conversions during the period.
According to official data, each procedure costs 60 to 120 million rials ($240-480), which is fully subsidized by the state for public transportation vehicles that have been prioritized in the first phase of the scheme.
