A novel by Austrian writer Robert Seethaler, about a young man and his friendship with celebrated physiologist Sigmund Freud during the Nazi occupation of Vienna, is available in Persian.

“The Tobacconist” is translated from German to Persian by Mahvash Khorramipour and released by Tandis Publication.

It is the story of the 17-year-old Franz who moves to Vienna in 1937 as an apprentice in a small tobacco shop, where he meets Sigmund Freud, a regular customer, whose predilection for cigars and occasional willingness to dispense romantic advice will forge a bond between him and young Franz.

As political and social conditions in Austria dramatically worsen with the Nazi annexation of the small European nation and arrival of the Nazi army in Vienna, Franz and Freud are plunged into the turmoil of events.

Robert Seethaler, 51, wrote the novel in 2012. The book has been recently adapted into a film directed by Nikolaus Leytner starring Bruno Ganz.

Seethaler’s latest book “A Whole Life” was short-listed for the Man Booker International Prize in 2017.
