A spherical metal object, thought to be a century-old cannonball, was found Saturday at the Chehel-Sotoun historical pavilion in the tourist city of Isfahan.

“Restoration workers found the metal object when they were doing earthworks to pave the northwestern street of Chehel-Sotoun garden,” CHTN quoted Fereydoun Allahyari, head of the provincial office of Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization, as saying.

“Given that Chehel-Sotoun pavilion and the surrounding garden and buildings were a major military base in the late Qajar (1786-1925) and early Pahlavi (1925-1979) periods, plus the fact that a part of Isfahan artillery was stationed at the premises of Chehel-Sotoun pavilion, this metal sphere can well be an old cannonball,” Allahyari said. According to the director of Chehel Sotoun World Heritage Center Asefeh Badr, the restoration project at the historical complex is scheduled to be completed by late August.
