Persian Puppet Show in Russia

The street theater play “A Dreamy Trip,” directed by Hamed Zarean is to be performed at the International Puppet Theater Festival “Petrushka the Great” in Russia, September 14-18.

The play written by Zarean and Abolfazl Varmazyar is a mix of traditional styles of Persian theater including naqali (traditional story telling), takam (traditional goat puppet in Azarbaijan region), parde-khani (dramatic story telling from paintings on a large painted drape) and marionette play alongside choral songs.

A Dreamy Trip will be performed, in Persian and English, by giant puppets at the outdoor section of the festival in the city of Ekterinburg, east of the Ural Mountains, ISNA reported on its Persian website.

“The puppets are in various shapes and sizes, from 10cm to six meter high,” Zarean said.

Zarean and his group specialize in making local and traditional puppets that represent old customs and stories including the Norouz festivity (Persian New Year).

Founded in 2002, Petrushka the Great is a biannual event and one of the most prestigious puppet theater festivals in Russia that underpins creativity and cooperation between Russia and other countries.
