An adaptation of the Greek tragedy of Hippolytus written by Euripides is to be staged at Tehran Independent Theater, July 22-August 22.

The play “Hippolytus,” directed by Farzad Amini, is the story of Hippolytus, son of King Theseus of Athens, who meets a terrible fate due to a series of misunderstandings that result in his death and suicide of his stepmother Phaedra, Honaronline reported on its Persian website.

Theme of the play includes personal interests versus the norms of society, unrestrained emotion versus excessive control, unrequited love and haste in passing judgment.

The cast includes Atiyeh Bayat, Raha Soleymani, Zahra Souri and Niayesh Nahavandi. The troupe earlier staged the play in Athens.

Greek playwright Euripides (406-480 BC) is considered the last of classical Athens’s three great tragic dramatists after Aeschylus and Sophocles. His notable works include Medea, Electra, Bacchae as well as The Trojan Women.

Tickets to the play are available at Tik8.com. The venue is located at No. 50, Vakil-e Zand Alley, Razi St., Valiasr St.
