Richard III is a historical play by Shakespeare believed to have been written around 1593. It depicts the Machiavellian rise to power and subsequent short reign of King Richard III of England.

After a long civil war between the royal families of York and Lancaster, England enjoys a period of peace under King Edward IV. But Edward’s younger brother, Richard, the Duke of Gloucester, resents Edward’s power and the bliss of those around him. He is determined to gain the crown of England from his brother.
