Farhadi’s ‘Everybody Knows’ Welcome in France

The Spanish psychological thriller of the two-time Oscar winning director Asghar Farhadi has sold over $5 million after three weeks of screening in France.

Costing $11.7 million and starring Spanish couple Penelope Cruz and Javiar Bardem and Argentinean actor Ricardo Darin, the kidnap thriller “Everybody Knows”  was premiered on the opening night at the Cannes Film Festival and was released by Memento Films Production in France the day after on May 9 in 350 theaters, ISNA reported on its Persian website.

It is Farhadi’s third film in Cannes competition after “The Salesman” (2016) and France-set “The Past” (2013), for the former he won the Cannes best screenplay award.

In the film, Laura (played by Cruz) and her two children travel from Argentina to her home village in Spain for her sister’s wedding.

As her sprawling family celebrates, during a blackout, Laura’s 16-year-old daughter goes missing and a ransom note appears.

Under pressure, family secrets and community tensions emerge. The family, its ties and the moral choices imposed on them lie at the heart of the plot.

Iranian director Farhadi achieved worldwide critical acclaim in 2011 with “A Separation,” which garnered the Golden Bear at Berlin and went on to win Golden Globe, César and Oscar awards for best foreign film.

Memento Films has already pre-sold the film in Germany, Austria, Latin America, Japan, China, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, Poland, Russia, Switzerland and Turkey.

UTA Independent Film Group is representing the rights to the sale of the film in North America along with Memento Films International.

Universal Pictures International will distribute the film in Spain in September under the title “Todos Lo Saben.”
