3 Galleries Displaying Photos of ‘Confrontation’

A group exhibition of urban photography is underway at three art galleries in Tehran.

The galleries of Hepta, Not and Theme are displaying photos of Tehran as a joint project titled “Confrontation”.

A total of seven artists have contributed to the event, presenting the outcome of an experimental venture concerning the metropolis, ISNA reported.

The exhibition is curated by photographer, theoretician and graphic artist, Roham Shiraz. It opened on May 4 and will run through May 16.

Contributing artists are Amir Alimi, Parastou Ibn-Ali, Mahsa Behdadi-Mehr, Hedieh Jamshidian, Hamid Hakkaki, Parisa Golshani and Catrin Maleki-Nazari. Roham Shiraz set Tehran as an experimental ground for the invited artists. He encouraged them to take a fresh look at the city, explore its visual potentials and present associated concepts.

The event seeks to create a layer that permeates through different aspects of the city. On display are photos showing various places from downtown to suburbs and from interiors to outdoors.

Alimi’s contribution to the exhibit is “Blindness,” a series of overexposed photos showing both the dystopian and utopian faces of Tehran.

“One may think that the photos are taken somewhere other than Tehran, but they were all taken in the city,” Alimi said.

He spent two years creating the photo set from which a selection is featured. Of the selection, a total of nine photographs are printed on light boxes. The three galleries are located not far from each other.

Hepta Gallery is located on Nikoushahr Dead-end, Iranshahr Street across Artists Park. Not Gallery is at No. 3, Shabnam Alley, Qaem-Maqam Street south of Motahari Avenue. Theme Art Gallery is located at No. 10, Zebarjad Alley, N. Nejatollahi Street on Karim Khan Avenue.
