Review on Avestan Codices

The Advanced Research Institute of Art, affiliated to the Iranian Academy of Arts, will hold a workshop to review Avestan codices.

Organized by the institute’s Committee of Pre-Islamic Iranian Art, the workshop will be held on Wednesday, according to the website of the Iranian Academy of Arts, Honar.ac.ir.

The workshop will be conducted by philologist, art historian, semiotician and author Neda Akhavan-Aqdam.

During the three hour session, Akhavan-Aqdam will talk about  principles in the writing and calligraphy of Avestan script, a writing system developed during the Sassanid era (226-651) to render the Avestan language. 

She will explain the origins of the script, the general framework and characteristics of ancient Iranian manuscripts. She will proceed with a review on some Avestan codices by referring to the figures of speech therein.

The workshop is open to the public. It will be held at the ARIA premises at No. 29, Valiasr Street, north of Imam Khomeini Street, on the corner of Hassan Sokhanvar Alley. 

ARIA operates under the auspices of the Higher Education Development Council, affiliated to the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology.
