Film on Koolbar Girl at Cannes Film Market

Iranian film ‘Kejal’ directed by Nima Yar and produced by Javad Norouz-Beigi will be screened at Cannes Film Market, May 8-17. According to Honaronline, Kejal portrays a young ‘koolbar’ girl living in the border regions of Kurdistan Province with Iraq. As her family struggles with a litany of financial problems she decides to take a masculine job. She goes across the border and brings heavy contraband goods on her back for sale. Poor men involved in this job to make a living in Iran are known as koolbars or back carriers.   The film market is the business arm of the prestigious Cannes festival and one of the largest film markets in the world. Established in 1959, it is held annually in conjunction with the festival in Cannes, France. This year’s participation is expected to reach 12,000. The cast includes Samira Zakaei, Maryam Boubani and Nastaran Mohammadi.
