Review of Palme d'Or Winners at IAF

The cinematheque of Iranian Artists Forum in Tehran is to screen the winning films of the most prestigious prize at the Cannes Film Festival, the Palme d'Or, during the first half of the new Iranian year (started March 21).  

Palme d'Or has been awarded every year since the 8th Cannes Film Festival in 1955. It is given to the best film selected by the respective year's jury.

According to a chart released by the public relations office of the IAF, the forum will host 19 films during the program, one film every Monday. They are to be played in order of the production year. All the films will be shown in the original language with Persian subtitles.

IAF began work on the present program on April 9 by screening 'Kagemusha', the 1980 film directed by Japanese film director and screenwriter Akira Kurosawa, Mehr News Agency reported.

Among the selected films is 'Taste of Cherry', the 1997 drama of internationally acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami (1940-2016) that will be shown on May 7. Taste of Cherry narrates the story of a well-to-do man who drives his truck around a city in search of someone who will quietly bury him under a cherry tree after he commits suicide.

Polish film  'Man of Iron' directed by  Andrzej Wajda, British comedy/drama  'Secrets and Lies' by  Mike Leigh , Japanese film 'The Eel' by  Shohei Imamura,  Greek drama 'Eternity and a Day' by Theo Angelopoulos, Italian drama 'The Son's Room'  written and directed by Nanni Moretti, crime drama 'Elephant' by Gus Van Sant, political documentary 'Fahrenheit 9/11' by Michael Moore, and two films from Belgium by Jean-Pierre Dardenne namely the coming-of-age fiction 'Rosetta' and crime drama 'The Child' are also on the list.
