World Press Photo Contest 2018, the most prestigious photojournalist event in the world has named six finalists for its photo of the year award, with nominated images highlighting issues of terrorism, war and political violence.

The annual prize honors the photographer whose visual creativity made an image that captures an event or issue of great journalistic importance, Euronews reported .

The winner will be announced on April 12 in an awards ceremony in Amsterdam.

One of the six nominated photos is offering a grim glimpse into Rohingya refugee crisis. Taken by Patrick Brown of Panos Pictures photo agency for Unicef, the photos shows the bodies of Rohingya refugees laid out after the boat in which they were attempting to flee Myanmar capsized about eight kilometers off Inani Beach, near Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. Around 100 people were on the boat before it capsized. There were 17 survivors.

A photo by Adam Ferguson for New York Times shows Aisha, 14, who had been kidnapped by the Boko Haram terrorist group in West Africa. She was assigned a suicide bombing mission, but managed to escape and find help. In the photo, Aisha stands for a portrait in Maiduguri, Borno State, Nigeria.

Reuters photographer Toby Melville witnessed the immediate aftermath of London Bridge Attack on June 3, 2017, where a van left the road and struck a number of people on the bridge. In the photo, a passerby comforts an injured woman lying on the pavement after 52-year-old Briton Khalid Masood drove his car in to the pedestrians on Westminster Bridge, killing and injuring several people.

During the Battle for Mosul, a joint military campaign launched to retake the city of Mosul, Iraq from the IS, Irish documentary photographer Ivor Prickett visited Iraq to take pictures for New York Times. His photo showing people lined up for aid after the battle, is among the six nominees.

When in Mosul, Prickett took another photo that has received special attention. It highlights an unidentified little boy who is being carried out of the last IS-controlled area in the old city.

The last photo on the shortlist is taken by Venezuelan photographer Ronaldo Schemidt for AFP. The photo was taken during the violent protests against Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro. The protests have resulted from the economic crisis the country is experiencing following the collapse in global oil prices. Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets and violent clashes erupted between protesters and police. Jose Victor Salazar Balza, 28, is shown running ablaze during the ghastly protests.
