Theater director and pioneer of traditional puppet show in Iran Behrouz Gharibpour has a puppet opera based on Shakespeare’s Macbeth on stage at Ferdowsi Theater Hall in Tehran. It is performed by Aran Puppet Theater Group, founded by Gharibpour. The music is composed by Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901), Honaronline reported. The story of the play is about a brave Scottish general Macbeth who receives a prophecy from a trio of witches that one day he will become King of Scotland. Consumed by ambition and spurred to action by his wife, Macbeth murders King Duncan and takes the Scottish throne for himself. He is then wracked with guilt and paranoia. Forced to commit more and more murders to protect himself from enmity and suspicion, he emerges as a tyrannical ruler. The bloodbath and consequent civil war swiftly hurl Macbeth and Lady Macbeth into the realms of madness and death. Gharibpour, 68, studied theater at University of Tehran and at the Dramatic Arts Academy in Rome. He founded puppet theater centers in Tehran and Isfahan. He is a veteran in writing and directing theater, puppet theater, movies, documentaries and TV series. He is also known for his wide research on Iranian puppetry as was commonly practiced during the Qajar era (1785-1925). Ferdowsi Hall, located on Shahryar Blvd., Hafez St., south of Enqelab St., will host the show until February 23.
