English-born American screenwriter, author, game designer and video game journalist Gary Whitta, 45, who co-developed the story for 2016 epic space opera film ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,’ is now adapting ‘The Last Jedi’ for a six-issue miniseries, the first of which will hit US stores on May 2.

Whitta will be joined by author, screenwriter and media critic Michael Walsh and author Mike Spicer, Theverge.com reported.

Former Marvel editor-in-chief Joe Queseda will produce a book cover featuring Rey, protagonist of ‘The Last Jedi’ on the harsh desert of Jakku.

On his Instagram page, Walsh says that they will be adding new scenes to the story. The comic book will not be the only adaptation of the film coming this spring: a novelization, written by writer and editor Jason Fry, will hit bookstores on March 6, which will also contain a number of additional scenes.

Star Wars is an American epic space opera media franchise, centered on a film series created by George Lucas. It depicts the adventures of various characters “a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away”. Since 1977 nine blockbuster films have been made. The films have also spawned an extensive media franchise including books, TV series, video games and theme park attractions, resulting in significant development of the series’ fictional universe.

Star Wars holds a Guinness World Records title for the “Most successful film merchandising franchise”. In 2015, the total value of the Star Wars franchise was estimated at US$42 billion, making Star Wars the second-highest-grossing media franchise of all time.
