Fajr Handicraft Festival Winners Announced

The 2nd Fajr International Handicrafts and Traditional Arts Festival was held January 21-30 at the Iranian Artists Forum in Tehran. At the closing ceremony six master artisans were commended and 10  received the Golden Cypress.

Rug designers Arash Heidarian and Mir Mola Soraya; Hamid Davati-Kazemnia, weaver of verni, a flat-weave carpet; textile expert and designer Afsaneh Modir-Amani; engraver and metal smith Ali-Asghar Khaksari; and textile and fashion designer Yasaman Nabizadeh were honored for their skills, IRNA reported.

Recipients of the Golden Cypress were engraver Hassan Neyestani, qalamkari (hand-painted or block-printed cotton textile) artist Nasrin Shayegan, wood-carver Majed Shahryari, metalworker Mohammad Khorshidi, textile designer Sara Hedayat, fashion designer Sanaz Nataj, embroidery artist Farangiz Jamalzehi, rug designer and producer Latif Abdollahi, kilim artist Monavvar Tavana and rug producer and entrepreneur Homataj Heydari.

“In this festival 200 artisans participated with 400 works. Innovation and creativity, genuineness, quality and design were among the criteria evaluation of the works,” said secretary of the event Ali Haji-Shirazi, director of research and education in national handicrafts at Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization.

At the first edition of the event last year 150 works had participated.
