An adaptation of Eugene O’Nill’s (1888-1953) ‘The Hairy Ape’ is on stage in Tehran under the direction of Gholamreza Moshiri. The central character of O’Neill’s expressionist play is someone who stokes the coal furnace of a transatlantic ship as a job. He is brutish and opinionated. He undergoes a crisis of identity and so starts his mental and physical deterioration when the rich daughter of an industrialist in the steel business refers to him as a “filthy beast”. O’Neill was an American playwright and Nobel laureate in literature. He was one of the greatest playwrights in American history. Through his experimental and emotionally probing dramas, he addressed the difficulties of human society with a deep psychological complexity. The performance is scheduled to run through January 19 at Drama Theater in Tehran, Tiwall.com wrote. Zahra Souri, Hamid Sadri, Tina Pishnamaz, Ali Tarimi, Berkeh Bazri, Hoda Hadzadeh, Raheleh Delfani and Mehdi Khodaei are in the cast.
