Festival Brings Together Ashiks From 4 Nations

The International Ashik Garib Festival was held December 10-11 at Baharan Cultural Center in Tehran.
Organized by Iran Ashiks Union, the festival brought together ashiks from Azerbaijan, Turkey, Iran and Georgia, Yolpress.ir reported.
Ashik is a mystic singer whose song is accompanied by a long-necked lute. The word ‘ashik’ means lover.
The two-day event was attended by 250 ashiks, 35 of whom were commended by the organizers. Azerbaijani ashik Elkhan Jalilov was one of the musicians who performed live for the audience.
In 2009, Azerbaijan’s ashik art was added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
