Tehran Bazaar’s Big Charsoq Under Renovation

The Big Charsoq in Tehran’s downtown Grand Bazaar is being restored in a joint project between Iran and Germany.
The renovation, organized by Iran’s Cultural Heritage and Tourism Research Center, is being conducted by a team of 11 experts, eight  from the research university of Aachen, Germany (Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen), Honaronline reported.
Charsoq or Charsuq means an intersection where two main bazaar corridors meet. The Big Charsoq in Tehran’s Grand Bazaar traces back to the Zandieh (1750-1794) and Qajar era (1796-1925), and its walls and arches are adorned with old designs and images. It was registered on Iran’s National Heritage List in 1977. There also is a Small Charsoq in the same bazaar.
Located near the famous Arg Square in southern Tehran, the Grand Bazaar is split into several labyrinthine corridors and tiny alleys stretching over 10 km. Each area specializes in different types of goods,  namely copper works, carpets, electronics, dry fruits, spices, home appliances, apparel, cosmetics, footwear, precious metals as well as small shops selling all types of merchandise.
