An annotated checklist of bird species in Iran has been published in English. The book is the outcome of extensive field research by experts from in and outside Iran.

Titled ‘Birds of Iran,’ the 192-page book is released by Iran-Shenasi Publishing Company, the leading publisher in environmental studies for over two decades, ILNA reported.

Iranian ornithologist Abolqasem Khaleqizadeh is among the authors. He is a researcher at the Iranian Research Institute of Plant Protection in Tehran. He studies bird-related problems in agriculture along with the population, ecology and behavior of birds.

Environmental scientist Mohammad Tohidifar is another Iranian author. With expertise in biodiversity, he has a good command of avian population in each region across the country.

  From Across the World

Among the foreign contributors to the book is the UK ornithologist and wetland specialist Derek Scott. He has been involved in conservation projects in western Europe, North and East Africa, Middle East, South and East Asia, Central and South America, the Caribbean and Pacific regions.

Dutch ornithologist and bird taxonomist Kees Roselaar has also contributed to the Birds of Iran. He is a researcher at the Naturalis Biodiversity Center, a national museum of natural history and a research center on biodiversity in Leiden, Netherlands.

Czech ornithologist Jiri Mlikovsky of Prague’s National Museum, Department of Zoology, is another foreign author. Zoology, taxonomy and paleontology are among his fields of research. His special interest is the avian faunas of Tertiary, the geological period from 65 million to 2.58 million years ago.

Other contributors are British ornithologist Michael J. Blair, a co-editor of ‘The EBCC Atlas of European Breeding Birds (1997)’ and Russian zoologist and ecologist Pavel Valeriyevich Kvartalnov of Lomonosov Moscow State University.

Birds of Iran is an annotated checklist of bird species and subspecies. The list updates all bird species recorded in Iran up to the beginning of 2017 and comprises the first ornithological document to cover all species and subspecies of birds observed in Iran in over a century, since the publication of the 1911 checklist by Ukrainian-Russian explorer and zoologist Nikolai Alekseyvich Zarudny (1859-1919).

An estimated 550 species are presented on the main list of the book. In the main systematic list a total of 535 subspecies are included, along with their global range, taxonomy and distribution in Iran.
