Mario, Luigi to Get Hollywood Animation

Iconic video game characters Mario and Luigi may just be Hollywood’s next big stars, with an animated Super Mario Bros. movie in the works.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Nintendo is reportedly near an agreement with American animation film production company Illumination Entertainment (producer of ‘Despicable Me’, ‘Minions’ and ‘The Secret Life of Pets’) to create a theatrical adaption of the classic video game.

Super Mario Bros. was last adapted in 1993 as a live action film of the same name set in New York. With an unfavorable reception both from critics and at the box office, it was not followed by any other film adaptations of Nintendo’s franchises.

Further details on how the famous pair of plumbers will be making their jump to the big screen are scarce, with the film still in the early development stages.
