TMOCA Screens 2 Claire Denis Films

The Cinematheque Hall of Tehran Museum of Contemporary Arts (TMOCA) screened two films by accomplished French writer and filmmaker Claire Denis, namely ‘White Material’ and ‘35 Shots of Rum’ on October 29 and 31. Denis, 71, is widely considered as one of the strongest voices in contemporary world cinema. Her work has a lasting impact on Europe’s cinematic identity and deals with themes of colonial and post-colonial West Africa plus issues in modern-day France, Mehr News Agency reported. ‘White Material’ (2009) was nominated for the Golden Lion at Venice Film Festival in Italy. Maria Vial, the main character is a struggling French coffee producer in an unnamed French speaking African country, who decides to stay at her coffee plantation in spite of an erupting civil war. The film was well received, earning high ratings and appearing in several movie critics’ top lists in 2010. ‘35 Shots of Rum’ (2008) has been very well received by critics. The review aggregator website Metacritic gave it a score of 96 out of 100, making it the second-best reviewed film of the year, with Rotten Tomatoes rating it 97%. It is about Lionel, a widower, who has raised his daughter Josephine on his own since she was young. The two are used to living alone, dependent solely on one another. But, now that Josephine is in college, Lionel is beginning to realize they cannot stay isolated forever.
