Cannes Winner Documentary at Iran Festival

A documentary by French cinematographer Emmanuel Gras, 41, ‘Makala’ will be screened at the 11th Cinema Verite, Iran’s International Documentary Film Festival, slated for December 10-17 in Tehran.
The film, that won Critics’ Week Prize at 2017 Cannes Festival, has entered the Special Screening section of Cinema Verite, IRNA reported.
Makala means charcoal in Swahili. It is a docudrama with aesthetic values. Tree felling, wood processing and charcoal production in the Democratic Republic of the Congo are depicted in the film.
The film runs along the life of a young couple whose lives depend on the land’s natural resources. Making charcoal, it turns out, is the easy part. More difficult is transporting it to town on foot and selling it for a price that is worth.
Gras takes an observational approach to all the events in his film, with no narration or onscreen involvement. There is a fine line between watching someone toil and feeling as though you are toiling, and ‘Makala’ does not always land on the right side of it, a review by Indie Wire (indiewire.com) wrote.
The 11th Cinema Verite will screen documentaries selected and commended at important events in the world including the international film festivals of Berlin, Venice and Locarno as well as International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival, Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (in Czech) and Visions Du Reel (in Switzerland).
