World Tourism Day Held

The official celebration of the World Tourism Day was held on Wednesday in Doha, Qatar, in the framework of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development 2017.

It was attended by high-level regional and international officials, including more than 20 speakers, UNWTO’s official website reported. This year’s event was themed “Sustainable Tourism, a Tool for Development” and focused on the targets of 2017.  At the end, Hungary was officially presented as the host of the 2018 WTD.

In Iran, a ceremony was held a day earlier on Sept. 26 to mark the international day in Tehran.

The event was attended by Ali Asghar Mounesan, the head of Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization, Mohammad Moheb-Khodaei, tourism deputy at ICHHTO, Mohammad Beheshti, the head of the Research Institute of Cultural Heritage and Tourism, and Hosseinali Amiri, vice president for parliamentary affairs.  The message of Taleb Rifai, secretary-general, World Tourism Organization, was read at the ceremony. .

The commemorative postal stamp of WTD was unveiled and leading institutes in tourism were commended in the meeting.

Besides the meeting, most Iranian museums admitted visitors free of charge on Sept. 27.  At the regional level, competitions, project inaugurations and other special programs were organized to mark the day. This year, WTD was overshadowed by the Muharram mourning rituals that commemorate the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (PBUH), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
