American actor Val Kilmer, 57, has signed on to star in ‘1st Born’, a comedy by Iranian filmmaker Ali Atshani.

The project centers on a newly married couple living in California, Iranian-born Ben and his American wife Kate.

When her first pregnancy has complications, it brings the whole family together. Ben’s father is an anti-American Iranian politician while Kate’s father, played by Kilmer, is an equally anti-Iranian US politician.

According to Hollywood Reporter, ‘1st Born’ is notable for being the first joint feature film co-production between Iran and Hollywood, using a cast and crew from both countries.

Kilmer is known for roles in ‘Top Gun’, ‘Batman Forever’, ‘Heat’, ‘Tombstone’ and other hits.

Atshani has directed several films such as ‘The President’s Cellphone’, ‘Wish Bone’, ‘Mr. Alef’ and Negar’s Role’. His 2016 film Paradise was a co-production between Iran and Germany.

LA Independent Film and Entertainment, based in Hollywood, will produce the joint work. Filming will begin in Los Angeles next month. The rest of the cast members are set to join soon.
